how to build a pavillion in 9 easy steps...

Here is the lastest plan of attack for the on-site assembly of the pavilion, based in large part by what we learned from our failures with the plywood mock-up, and on the phased production schedule of the Fibre-C profiles which we have agreed with Rieder.

1. Cross Members of Floor deck are layed in place

2. Primary Deck, Bench, and Wall profiles inserted into deck.

3. Lower wall Cross Profiles inserted.

4. Plywood framed jig support erected

5. Primary Global profiles are lifted into place via crane and positioned on jig support.

6. Top Cross Profiles are placed, locking entire roof structure together, and splicing the roof to the walls.

7. Horizontal Bench Profiles are inserted

8. Bench Cross profiles are placed forming the horizontal surfaces of the bench and counter areas.

9. COMPLETION!!!

Sure looks easy...doesn't it? We've still got a lot to figure out, but the wheels are in motion...as always, more to come...

ALAN DEMPSEY

Alan Dempsey studied at the Architectural Association, Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, and Dublin Institute of Technology. He has worked with Farjadi Architects, OCEAN, Future Systems and is a founding director of NEX, a London based architecture and design office with international projects.

He was an undergraduate unit master at the AA until 2005 and has been an invited critic at universities in the UK and Europe. His work has been widely published in the US, Europe and Asia and he is currently a director of the FAB research cluster at the AA, which facilitates research projects on novel design and fabrication technologies.

ALVIN HUANG

Alvin Huang is the founding Director of SYNTHESIS. He is an award-winning designer and educator specializing in the integrated application of material performance, emergent design technologies and digital fabrication in contemporary architectural practice.

Prior to forming SYNTHESIS, he was a founding director of London-based architectural practice AL_A. He has also worked for Future Systems, Zaha Hadid Architects, and DMJM Design (AECOM).

Alvin received a Masters of Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association Design Research Laboratory (2004) and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Southern California (1998).

Huang has taught design studios at the Architectural Association / Tsinghua University Global School in Beijing and at the Chelsea College of Art in London. He has been an invited critic and guest lecturer at various universities and institutions in the UK, US, Germany, Spain, Israel, Switzerland and China.
